According to the World Bank’s 2024 Tracking report, for the first time in decades, the number of people around the world living without electricity is going up. We are not on track to meet SDG7. Africa only has 1% of installed solar photovoltaic capacity while holding 60% of the world’s best solar resources.
The problem is not a lack of money.
The problem is that it is not going to where it is most effective.
We exist to help solve this problem.
The TFE team is composed of investment experts, electrical and software engineers, electrification experts and economists. We have a long history in emerging markets and considerable experience managing large, international, technical projects and liaising with the full spectrum of stakeholders, from investors and developers to energy end-users and government ministries. Our core team is fully staffed by African citizens.
Africa has approximately 40% of the world’s total solar potential. Yet in sub-Saharan Africa alone, 600 million people, or approximately 53% of the region’s population, live without access to electricity. Hundreds of millions more have only limited or unreliable electricity.
The continent is blessed with tremendous mineral resources and, crucially is home to the world’s youngest population, 70% of which is under the age of 30.
The potential for growth is staggering.
We also see a potential to steer this growth in a way that leapfrogs many of the environmentally disastrous development steps of the so-called ‘developed’ world.
We cut our teeth building some of the pioneering solar mini grids on islands in the middle of Lake Victoria, founded one of the largest digital smart meter companies in the sector, built pioneering energy consumption prediction models and achieved our hard-fought finance expertise testing out investment cases for renewables across the Global South. We now work advising governments and some of the largest players in the world of development finance and commercial finance.
